Leave No Stone Unturned

Several of my family members are buried in the same small section of Elmwood Cemetery in River Grove, Illinois. It’s a well-organized cemetery, broken into sections and most gravestones are facing the same direction in any given section. It’s hard to see from this photo, but trust me, they’re pretty much all facing the same direction.

Great, right? I mean, you can start in a row and walk it, while reading each gravestone. The problem? Sometimes there are things on the “BACK” of the stones! This is especially true for “monument” stones that are placed in the center of a lot and display the names of various people buried in the same lot. And sometimes, if a stone is erected years later, there may be a plaque on the back naming those who erected it and when.

This first image is the “backside” of the second image.

Bonus

And don’t forget the back of pages! I’m in the habit of this now, but early on I made this rookie mistake—a lot! Remember to turn the page in record books, histories/genealogies, indexes, etc. This also goes for the back side of loose papers.
