{"id":983,"date":"2009-04-23T00:44:00","date_gmt":"2009-04-23T05:44:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/what-once-was-is-no-more\/"},"modified":"2013-07-12T00:17:00","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T05:17:00","slug":"what-once-was-is-no-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/what-once-was-is-no-more\/","title":{"rendered":"What Once Was, Is No More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some of my research focus lately, has been on my PARKS\/PARKE family,\u00a0 partially because it had to do with lineage for DAR.\u00a0 And fortunately, I&#8217;ve had two wonderful people do some legwork for me in Oakland County, Michigan.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A month or so ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.warrenweb.info\/genealogy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Granny Pam<\/a> was kind enough to go to her genealogy library and send me copies of so resources, such as cemetery and marriage records collected in some books.\u00a0 This was a tremendous help in connecting some dots.<\/p>\n<p>About the same time, <a href=\"http:\/\/dwellers.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Weller<\/a> took a trip to Beach Road Cemetery in Troy, Oakland, Michigan.\u00a0 With snow on the ground, it was difficult find much, but he did get a photo of the memorial that was erected that shows all the people buried there, along with their burial dates.<\/p>\n<p>David went back to Beach about a week or so ago and sent me several photos.\u00a0 This cemetery is likely considered &#8220;abandoned&#8221; and is in really bad shape.\u00a0 David did manage to find two stones that belong to members of my family.\u00a0 I believe he said that the one is one of the only\u00a0 ones still standing.<\/p>\n<p>Edward W. PARKS is my fourth great-granduncle.\u00a0 According to one source, he married a Marcia MARTIN, date unknown.\u00a0 The gravestone indicates that Fanny M. was his wife.\u00a0 One in the same?\u00a0 Probably, but more digging is necessary to confirm or disprove.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" 1898<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now for the sad part.\u00a0 The photograph below has been in my possession for years, and it took some time to figure out how it connected to the family.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" of the photo, the following was written:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" align=\"center\">\n<table width=\"500\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"2\" cellpadding=\"2\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"500\">\n<p align=\"left\"><em>The tall monument marks the resting place of our Great-grandfather Robert Parks the markers Grand father and Grand mother Webster.\u00a0 Some day I may get a better picture they are buried close to the front fence.\u00a0 Taken Dec. 5, 1921.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>Well, I don&#8217;t know who took the photo, although I imagine it was my second great-grandmother, Sarah Jane &#8220;Jeanie&#8221; MULLIGAN.\u00a0 The picture is the gravestone of Robert PARKS, and his first and second wives, Mary &#8220;Polly&#8221; SMITH and Elizabeth IRISH.\u00a0 I&#8217;m guessing that the two stones to the right of the obelisk are that of Calvin Price WEBSTER and Betsy PARKS, as they were also buried in Beach and would agree with the note on the back of the photo.<\/p>\n<p>Calvin and Betsy are my fourth great-grandparents.\u00a0 Betsy is the daughter of Robert and Polly, sister of Edward mentioned earlier in this post.\u00a0 Robert and Polly are my fifth great-grandparents.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming that Sarah took this photo, she would have had 26 years to come back and take &#8220;a better picture&#8221; before she died.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure if she did, but I&#8217;m betting she&#8217;d be disappointed to see the pictures I have now, nearly 88 years later.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" the resources to go and reset the stone.\u00a0 Heck, I wish I had the resources to fix up the whole cemetery!\u00a0 But in a sad sense, I do have &#8220;better&#8221; pictures of the\u00a0 stone,
