{"id":941,"date":"2009-06-09T11:54:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-09T16:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/saturday-night-genealogy-fun-april-25-2009\/"},"modified":"2013-07-11T19:34:34","modified_gmt":"2013-07-12T00:34:34","slug":"saturday-night-genealogy-fun-april-25-2009","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/saturday-night-genealogy-fun-april-25-2009\/","title":{"rendered":"SNGF &#8211; Date Calculator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Doing a little catch up here on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geneamusings.com\/\">Randy\u2019s<\/a> Saturday night challenges.<\/p>\n<p>April 25th challenge:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open your genealogy software program and search for a &#8220;Date Calculator.&#8221; You could go exploring in your Tools or Options menu, or you could use the Help menu to find it.<\/li>\n<li>Open the &#8220;Date Calculator&#8221; and put in a death date for one of your ancestors and put in an age at death (use the one you know, or just make one up &#8211; we&#8217;re just testing this feature today). Do the same thing by entering a birth date and a death date in the &#8220;Date Calculator&#8221; and see how old someone was when they died.<\/li>\n<li>Tell us what software you&#8217;re using and where you found the &#8220;Date Calculator.&#8221; Tell us the information you found out from using the &#8220;Date Calculator.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nThe wonderful thing about Legacy is that I don\u2019t need the Date Calculator to answer the questions:\u00a0 How old were they when they died? and How old would they be today?<\/p>\n<p>The screenshot below is the data entry screen for my second great-grandfather.\u00a0 On the far right, there are two numbers circled in red.\u00a0 The first number is the age he would be today, while the second number is the age he was when he died.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-10-29 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-10-29 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6Tq2nJgDI\/AAAAAAAADg4\/_07ZNjF53ug\/6-9-2009%2011-10-29%20AM%5B3%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"155\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The same can be said for age at marriage.\u00a0 The screenshot below shows the data entry screen for Timothy\u2019s marriage.\u00a0 Circled at the top is the age of both the bride and the groom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-18-03 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-18-03 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6TrYgEAeI\/AAAAAAAADg8\/7c4a_RABc0c\/6-9-2009%2011-18-03%20AM%5B3%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"149\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have had to use the date calculator tool to determine birth dates.\u00a0 For example, James Mulligan\u2019s death certificate indicates that he died on 8 October 1879 and that his age was 66 years, 9 months, and 1 day.\u00a0 Using that, I opened the calculator and put in that information (see below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-24-13 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-24-13 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6TrtUUOvI\/AAAAAAAADhA\/lx-jDnAF0ic\/6-9-2009%2011-24-13%20AM%5B7%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"203\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once I hit the <em>Calculate<\/em> button, it displays the date I was looking for.\u00a0 It also indicates that day of the week for each date.\u00a0 I accessed the calculator through the person\u2019s record while in the birth date field.\u00a0 So I have the option to put that found date in the field by clicking the <em>Select Date<\/em> button on the right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-25-53 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-25-53 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6TrxknJdI\/AAAAAAAADhE\/bBYr_lmZVUc\/6-9-2009%2011-25-53%20AM%5B3%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"203\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the date calculator, Legacy also has a calendar, which has come in handy for calculating death and burial dates based on the obituary.\u00a0 For example, Timothy J McMahon\u2019s obituary was published in the Chicago Tribune on 15 October 1939.\u00a0 The obit indicated that his funeral will be held on Tuesday.\u00a0 So in this example, I put the publication date of 15 October 1939 in the burial field and open the calendar.\u00a0 I find the \u201cTuesday\u201d and click on it and then click the <em>Select Date<\/em> button.\u00a0 His burial is now set to 17 October 1939.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-38-33 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-38-33 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6TsSphb_I\/AAAAAAAADhI\/SEwDC9mwBAQ\/6-9-2009%2011-38-33%20AM%5B7%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"149\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-40-25 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-40-25 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6Tsi_YHDI\/AAAAAAAADhM\/BoBqnHbmo74\/6-9-2009%2011-40-25%20AM%5B3%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"424\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"6-9-2009 11-45-41 AM\" alt=\"6-9-2009 11-45-41 AM\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/Si6Tsz7YWrI\/AAAAAAAADhQ\/m-gcAhtLphk\/6-9-2009%2011-45-41%20AM%5B3%5D.png?imgmax=800\" width=\"500\" height=\"149\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Did I mention how much I love Legacy???<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doing a little catch up here on Randy\u2019s Saturday night challenges.
