This is a helpful tool for determining the locations of addresses in your family history. Where your ancestral homestead once stood may now be a warehouse, a parking lot or a field. Perhaps the house is still there. When you input addresses in Google Maps, don\u2019t forget to use the Satellite View and Street View options for perspectives that put you were right there where your ancestors once stood. If you\u2019ve used this tool before, take sometime and play with it again. Push all the buttons, click all the links and devise new ways it can help with your personal genealogy research. If you have a genealogy blog, write about your experiences with Google Maps, or suggest similar easy (and free) tools that have helped in your own research.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nI use Google Maps all the time.\u00a0 I have several maps that I\u2019ve plotted my family\u2019s residences and cemeteries.\u00a0 I had mainly focused on my Chicago families, which is a difficult task since I have to convert addresses prior to 1909 in order to find the correct placement on today\u2019s map.\u00a0 Additionally, many street names have changed over the years, adding an extra step in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Since I\u2019ve been working on my Oakland County, Michigan folks, I thought I\u2019d do some plotting on Google Maps.\u00a0 Right now, the map includes all the cemeteries were my family is buried, as well as outlines of the land my family purchased through the federal government in the 1820s.\u00a0 This was the first time I\u2019ve plotted anything from a township map on a street map.\u00a0 Fortunately, I was able to find a township map online from 1990 that also included the street names, so I was able to figure it out!!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"streetview\" alt=\"streetview\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/S3uEF3Tex9I\/AAAAAAAAFcc\/m2GgK7CiN08\/streetview%5B4%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"502\" height=\"329\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The nice thing about Google Maps is the Satellite view.\u00a0 In one case, I was not able to find a cemetery because it was not labeled on the map.\u00a0 All I had was a general description of where it was located.\u00a0 I switched to Satellite view and was able to see the cemetery in order to plot the exact location.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"satelliteview\" alt=\"satelliteview\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/S3uEGX298gI\/AAAAAAAAFcg\/uGr6r2sMgSI\/satelliteview%5B4%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"502\" height=\"356\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re welcome to take a look at this particular map of my <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=104910962983594709965.00047fc334f01baec0d74&amp;ll=42.631449,-83.220062&amp;spn=0.006867,0.01929&amp;t=h&amp;z=16\">Family in Oakland County, Michigan<\/a>, to see how I use this application.\u00a0 Another map that I created to help me with my Emil MILLER research can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=104910962983594709965.00046716e26f6314a057e&amp;z=13\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 In this case, I am trying to find applicable Emil MILLER\/MULLER\/MUELLERs that could be my Emil.\u00a0 I\u2019ve plotted those found in the Chicago city directories in Google Maps, for those who resided close to the church were three generations passed through.\u00a0 There are quite a few, but it\u2019s helped me to narrow down the possibilities based on location to the church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s challenge: Play with Google Maps.
