I came across a post yesterday at The Ancestry Insider<\/a>, entitled, Rate Your Genealogical Maturity<\/a>.\u00a0 Since I\u2019ve only been doing this for a few years, I thought I\u2019d take the \u201ctest\u201d and see how I rate.\u00a0 Here are my results:<\/p>\n

Sources<\/strong> \u2013 Right now I\u2019d rate myself as Practicing<\/strong>: \u201c Uses a limited number of record types and repositories. Mostly relies on online and microfilmed sources.\u201d\u00a0 Although I am starting to branch out in to more record types and repositories.\u00a0 Score = 3<\/p>\n

Citations<\/strong> \u2013 For this, I\u2019m Proficient<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u201cGives complete and accurate source citations including provenance and quality assessment.\u201d\u00a0 Score = 4<\/p>\n

Information<\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019m between Practicing<\/strong> and Proficient<\/strong>.\u00a0 Practicing:\u00a0 \u201cJudges information by source type, informant knowledge, and record timing. Applies “primary\/secondary” to information instead of sources.\u201d\u00a0 Proficient:\u00a0 \u201cAdditionally, learns history necessary to recognize and evaluate all explicit information in a source.\u201d\u00a0 Score =3.5<\/p>\n

Evidence<\/strong> \u2013 For this I\u2019d have to say Stellar<\/strong>, which is capturing both direct and indirect evidence whether in support or conflict.\u00a0 Score = 5<\/p>\n

Conclusions<\/strong> \u2013 Right now, I\u2019d have to say Practicing<\/strong> (although I aspire to Stellar), which is:\u00a0 \u201cLearning to evaluate the quality of sources, information, and evidence. Emerging ability to resolve minor discrepancies.\u00a0 Additionally, resolves conflicting evidence or uses it to disprove prevalent opinion. Usually applies correct identity to persons mentioned in sources.\u201d\u00a0 Score = 3<\/p>\n

Conclusion Trees<\/strong> \u2013 This would be Practicing<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u201cNever merges entire compiled genealogies into own tree. Contributes or changes community trees only with evidence.\u201d\u00a0 Score = 3<\/p>\n

Overall score = 21.5<\/strong>, placing my overall genealogical maturity at Practicing<\/strong>.\u00a0 I think this is absolutely accurate.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also refreshing to know that even though I haven\u2019t been doing genealogy all that long, I have moved beyond the \u201cbeginner\u201d title.\u00a0 I aspire to higher standards in my research, and am taking steps to make that happen.\u00a0 I belong to NGS<\/a> and NEHGS<\/a> and learn so much from reading their publications.\u00a0 I have purchased several reference books published by well-respected genealogists so I can learn more about research methodology and record types.\u00a0 I also started taking courses at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies<\/a>.\u00a0 I try to take all that I learn and implement it into my own research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
