{"id":737,"date":"2010-04-29T17:07:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-29T22:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/connecticut-archives-a-must-see-resource\/"},"modified":"2013-07-09T17:36:49","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T22:36:49","slug":"connecticut-archives-a-must-see-resource","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/connecticut-archives-a-must-see-resource\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecticut Archives \u2013 A Must-See Resource"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019ve been to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cslib.org\/\">Connecticut State Library<\/a> website a few times before.\u00a0 But apparently I missed the big-ticket item of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cslib.org\/ctarch.htm\">Connecticut Archives<\/a>.\u00a0 I had previously viewed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cslib.org\/archives\/FAIndexes\/\">State Archive Finding Aids<\/a> and other genealogy-related pages, but somehow missed the page with all the online indexes to the Connecticut Archives.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>According to their website, the \u201c\u2019Connecticut Archives\u2019 are the papers and correspondence of the General Assembly, the Governor and Council, and other colony or state officials. Included in this collection are petitions, drafts of bills, acts, resolves, and other early government documents.\u201d\u00a0 The papers are broken down into several topics, such as Colonial Wars, Estates of Deceased Persons, and Towns and Lands.\u00a0 Some are further broken down into series.\u00a0 All of the categories have a date range, which falls between 1629 and 1820.<\/p>\n<p>The best part, all of the collections (except one) have an index, which is available online!\u00a0 I spent all day yesterday looking at all of the indexes that were applicable to my Parks and Webster families (more on that in another post).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Accessing the Indexes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of the collections are listed on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cslib.org\/ctarch.htm\">Connecticut Archives<\/a> web page.\u00a0 Each contains a hyperlink to access the index (except for one, where no index is available, as noted).<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, you\u2019ll get a page with links to the PDF of a volume.\u00a0 In this case, choose the volume you want on the left, then click on the \u201cAccess This Item\u201d link on the right.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Volumes1\" alt=\"Volumes1\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/S9oDNxOOBPI\/AAAAAAAAFig\/EGJReX76-Es\/Volumes15.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"492\" height=\"210\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Volumes2\" alt=\"Volumes2\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/S9oDOXSVJkI\/AAAAAAAAFik\/12HK64pqTEs\/Volumes25.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"492\" height=\"210\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you get one that is by volume, you can scroll down and look under \u201cDescriptions-Table of Contents\u201d to see which volume covers which letters of the alphabet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Volumes3\" alt=\"Volumes3\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/S9oDOu7yO3I\/AAAAAAAAFio\/8QNRlEm2lzI\/Volumes34.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"492\" height=\"135\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other times, you\u2019ll get links to PDFs of individual pages.\u00a0 In this case, it\u2019s a guessing game as to where you end up in the index.\u00a0 Keep choosing pages until you find what you are looking for.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Pages1\" alt=\"Pages1\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/S9oDPPYeEcI\/AAAAAAAAFis\/R0UYAclxgxE\/Pages15.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"492\" height=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Finding the Records<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve (hopefully) found some resources in the index, where do you go for the records?\u00a0 The Connecticut State Library holds the microfilms of these collections.\u00a0 (I believe they have all the originals, and if not all, then some, but use is restricted unless the microfilm is not readable.)\u00a0 Additionally, some are available the the FHL (they are marked by an asterisk (*).<\/p>\n<p><strong>FHL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best way to find the collections is by doing a Title search in the Library Catalog for \u201cConnecticut Archives&#8221;
