{"id":721,"date":"2010-05-27T20:55:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T01:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/experimenting-with-scribd\/"},"modified":"2013-07-09T17:13:03","modified_gmt":"2013-07-09T22:13:03","slug":"experimenting-with-scribd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/experimenting-with-scribd\/","title":{"rendered":"Experimenting With Scribd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Quite some time ago I learned about <a href=\"http:\/\/scribd.com\/\">Scribd<\/a> from Denise Olsen, who authors the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/moultriecreek.us\/gazette\/?cat=1\">Family Matters<\/a> (now part of <a href=\"http:\/\/moultriecreek.us\/gazette\/\">Moultrie Creek Gazette<\/a>).\u00a0 Scribd is basically an online document repository.\u00a0 You can upload documents, which can be public or private, and find documents uploaded by others.\u00a0 What\u2019s really great, is that there is a sub-category for Genealogy, which is under the main category of Research.\u00a0 At the time, I didn\u2019t really have a need for it, but set up an account because I knew someday, I\u2019d find a use for it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Over the last few months, I have been acquiring and transcribing probate records and deeds.\u00a0 I wanted to share these transcriptions, but did not want to have to hassle with the formatting in HTML on my blog.\u00a0 A couple of weeks ago I got an email from Scribd telling me that Michael John Neill (author of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.casefileclues.com\/\">Casefile Clues<\/a>) is now \u201cfollowing\u201d me.\u00a0 And then it hit me!\u00a0 Why not publish my transcriptions on Scribd?\u00a0 So that\u2019s what I have started to do.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s also really great, is that you can embed the document in your webpage or blog (see examples below).\u00a0 The reader can view the entire document from within your webpage or blog, without having to follow a link to Scribd.\u00a0 The first example below is a one-page document.\u00a0 The second, is a seventeen-page document, all contained in one window in this blog post.<\/p>\n<p>Scribd documents are picked up by popular search engines, making your documents more visible.\u00a0 If you are looking for a cheap (that is, FREE) way to put some of your genealogy information out there, you should consider Scribd.\u00a0 As with other online tools, I would not put out anything you plan to publish for a profit (although I believe there is a \u201csell\u201d feature on Scribd), for fear of copyright violation.\u00a0 For me, I don\u2019t plan to do anything with these transcriptions, but I have disabled the download and copy\/paste features so people can\u2019t \u201csteal\u201d it with a simple click of the mouse (they can print it and review it online).\u00a0 This philosophy may change over time, but for right now, it\u2019s what makes me comfortable.<\/p>\n<p>You can visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/juliemc77\">my Scribd profile<\/a> to see my documents, see what other genealogists I \u201cfollow,\u201d and subscribe to my documents, if you like.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12px auto 6px auto;
