Two of the more popular national\/regional societies are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngsgenealogy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Genealogical Society<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanancestors.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New England Historic Genealogical Society<\/a>. Professional-related societies include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apgen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association of Professional Genealogists<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historians.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American Historical Association<\/a>. I personally use <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop.html?promoid=DJDTV\" target=\"_blank\">Photoshop<\/a> because I also use several other Adobe products in the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/creativesuite.html?promoid=JOLIS\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Cloud<\/a>. I\u2019ve heard that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop-elements.html\">Photoshop Elements<\/a> is a cheaper alternative to Photoshop and still provides a wide range of capabilities suitable to the needs of genealogists. Another option popular among genealogists is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vivid-pix.com\/restore\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vivid-Pix RESTORE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are looking for digital photo and\/or document storage, then <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forever.com\/sign_up?referral_token=julie-tarr\" target=\"_blank\">FOREVER Storage<\/a> may be for you. FOREVER is a unique cloud-based storage system that lasts for your lifetime plus 100 years. Basically, you buy storage space (not via subscription!) and then you own it and the company&#8217;s protocols make it possible for your FOREVER Storage archive to live on after you&#8217;re gone. You can start out with 2GB for free to check it out and play around with it to see if it&#8217;s something you want to invest in. Plus, they have photo organization software called Historian, as well as stuff for digital scrap booking. They also have a way to create products with your photos, such as mugs, calendars, photo books, puzzles, and more. Need to get your stuff digitized? They have a service for that too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A non-genealogy program that may be of interest to you is <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/foldermarker.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Folder Marker<\/a>. You could color code surname folders based on the color associated with your grandparents\u2019 lines (blue for paternal grandfather, green for paternal grandmother, red for maternal grandfather, and yellow for maternal grandmother), or use it for projects, client work, and other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Subscription Websites<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/ancestry.com\" target=\"_blank\">Ancestry.com<\/a><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.awltovhc.com\/image-7198466-10470501\"><\/strong> \u2013 Lots of stuff! Records and indexes, variety of types covering many places. Make sure you specify if you want a US or World subscription.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/fold3.com\" target=\"_blank\">Fold3<\/a><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.awltovhc.com\/image-7198466-10967210\"><\/strong> \u2013 Their focus is on military-related records. However, they also have a big collection of non-military records including city directories, newspapers, and censuses. You can get this with an All Access Ancestry subscription.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newspapers.com<\/a> \u2013 Lots of digitized newspapers from 1700s to 2000s. Upgrade for complete access. You can get this with an All Access Ancestry subscription (but would still need to upgrade for complete access).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.genealogybank.com\/gbnk\/?utm_source=657607&amp;utm_medium=gbhp_text&amp;utm_campaign=affil&amp;kbid=657607&amp;m=3\" target=\"_blank\">GenealogyBank<\/a><strong> <img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/affiliates.genealogybank.com\/b.aspx?id=657607&amp;mm=3\" alt=\"\"><\/strong>\u2013 Oodles of newspapers at your fingertips. This is my personal favorite website for newspaper research. They also have a Historical Documents collection, which has some rather interesting resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.findmypast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Findmypast<\/a> \u2013 Major focus is on the UK and Ireland, however they are adding US record collections all the time. Of particular interest is their British and Irish newspaper collection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.myheritage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MyHeritage<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tqlkg.com\/image-7198466-10776885\"> \u2013 Good set of records \u201cincluding the world\u2019s largest collection of newspapers.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tools &amp; Gadgets<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many tools out there that come in handy for the genealogist. Here are a few of my favorites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gMBeE3\" target=\"_blank\">Kindle Fire<\/a> \u2013 Now known as Fire tablets, there are many options to suit anyone\u2019s need. As far as genealogy is concerned, here\u2019s my story. I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas in 2011 and had no idea how much I would use it for genealogy. I went an entire week at the Family History Library with only the Fire, while my laptop stayed in the hotel room. It\u2019s also great to have my genealogy database at my fingertips for those times when I\u2019m at a family gathering and people start asking questions\u2026quick, easy access, and they have their answer. Not into the Kindle? Consider other tablets or the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/ipad\" target=\"_blank\">iPad<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33UasRF\" target=\"_blank\">Brother DS-640 Mobile Scanner<\/a> \u2013 I\u2019ve had this DS-600 version of this scanner for several years and I love it. The great thing about this mobile feed scanner is that <strong>you can scan legal pages in one scan<\/strong>. It\u2019s also a great backup for when the Flip-Pal batteries are dead. Although I don\u2019t have one, I hear a lot of people talk about hand-held <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FzqBBZ\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cwand\u201d scanners<\/a> as another mobile scanner option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2KTEa2g\" target=\"_blank\">CZUR Aura-B Book and Document Scanner<\/a> \u2013 I recently saw a genealogist rave about this\u2026it may go on my own wish list this year!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Fyh3HC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wolverine Titan 8-in-1 High Resolution Film to Digital Converter<\/a> \u2013 An older version of this product had been on my own wish list for years\u2014the new version does even more!
