I Actually Won?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"trophy\" alt=\"trophy\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/TdH0_s7vPhI\/AAAAAAAAFyU\/HLaC-59R658\/trophy%5B4%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"194\" height=\"242\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/> You may recall my Facebook status a few months back indicating I had some great news to share but couldn\u2019t at the time because it hadn\u2019t been officially announced.\u00a0 Well, on May 11th, it was official\u2026I took 3rd Place in Category 5 (unpublished work by published author) of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.isfhwe.org\/\">International Society of Family History Writers and Editors<\/a> (ISFHWE) Writing Competition.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The awards were announced on May 11th at the annual ISFHWE banquet in conjunction with the NGS conference.\u00a0 Unfortunately I was unable to be there in person.\u00a0 A list of all the winners is available in Dick Eastman\u2019s blog post <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.eogn.com\/eastmans_online_genealogy\/2011\/05\/isfhwe-excellence-in-writing-competition-winners-announced.html\">ISFHWE Excellence in Writing Competition Winners Announced<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The article I submitted was entitled \u201cWith One Mystery Solved, Others Surface,\u201d and is about my Miller clan.\u00a0 I had previously posted various research and conclusions on this blog, but the article took all the pieces and expanded on all the elements with a focus on the immigrant ancestor.\u00a0 The last post, <a title=\"Slowly Breaking Through Emil\u2019s Brick Wall\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/slowly-breaking-through-emils-brick-wall\/\">Slowly Breaking Through Emil\u2019s Brick Wall<\/a> discusses the research up to that point (links to the previous posts are included); the article I submitted was essentially the next part in the research story.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, I really didn\u2019t anticipate placing at all.\u00a0 This is the first writing competition (of any kind) that I have entered, and to place third in my category is an honor.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait to expand on this accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>I want to take a moment to thank a few people who inspired me and \u201cpushed\u201d me into entering the competition.\u00a0 First, I want to thank Oriene Springstroh, fellow writer and ISGS Board Member, for her inspiration.\u00a0 Through discussions with Oriene, I learned more about myself and the direction I want to take in terms of genealogy\u2026essentially, the writing aspect.\u00a0 Her words of encouragement stick with me all the time.<\/p>\n<p>I also want to thank <a href=\"http:\/\/sherifenley.blogspot.com\/\">Sheri Beffort Fenley<\/a>, who <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">pushed<\/span> encouraged me into entering the competition in December.\u00a0 At the end of the year, I had written up my <a title=\"2010 Achievements &amp; 2011 Resolutions\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/2010-achievements-2011-resolutions\/\">2010 Achievements &amp; 2011 Resolutions<\/a> post.\u00a0 In that post I talked about the fact that I had an entry written for the competition, but wasn\u2019t sure if I was going to enter at that time or wait until this year (the entry deadline was December 31st, so I didn\u2019t have much time to decide).\u00a0 Sheri left the following comment:\u00a0 \u201cSubmit that article to ISFHWE!
