In that post I shared several general references for learning about the times in which our ancestors lived. <\/p>\n<p>Last week, I spent a great deal of time working on understanding a particular immigrant family\u2019s voyage from Germany to the US. I came across some great references related to the voyage and transportation that I thought I\u2019d share here.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Books<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33wZazZ\" target=\"_blank\">Forgotten Doors: The Other Ports of Entry to the United States<\/a>, by M. Mark Stolarik\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33DndgP\" target=\"_blank\">Strangers at the Door: Ellis Island, Castle Garden, and the Great Migration to America<\/a>, by Ann Novotny\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2qdDYR3\" target=\"_blank\">The Huddled Masses: The Immigrant in American Society, 1880-1921<\/a>, by Alan M. Kraut (has a chapter dedicated to the journey)\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2oBZLSi\" target=\"_blank\">Ships of Our Ancestors<\/a>, by Michael J. Anuta<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Websites<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gjenvick.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gjenvick-Gj\u00f8nvik Archives<\/a> (a.k.a. GG Archives) \u2013 Has a whole section of their website dedicated to ocean travel with tons of information and ephemera. (And don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s in English!)\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.norwayheritage.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Norway Heritage<\/a> \u2013 Has images and articles related to various immigration topics, including \u201cThe Voyage.\u201d They images and articles are not necessarily specific to Norwegians, so the site is worth checking out. The site is a little tricky to navigate (pun intended?), so be sure to spend some time on the home page to take a look around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I mentioned in the last post, I have a whole <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/review\/list\/8774517-julie?shelf=genealogy-social-history\" target=\"_blank\">list on Goodreads<\/a> dedicated to the topic of social history.
