I never really gave it much thought\u2014until I started doing genealogy, that is. Turns out, some of these aunts and uncles are technically cousins (and some aren\u2019t related at all!).<\/p>\n<p>For example, my \u201cAunt\u201d Shirley. Technically, she is my mom\u2019s first cousin, making Shirley my first cousin once removed. And my \u201cUncle\u201d Bob, well he\u2019s my dad\u2019s first cousin, making him my first cousin once removed.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder why they were referred to as an aunt or uncle? Terms of endearment?
