I can highlight it, stick post-its all over it, write notes, and flip back and forth with ease. Although this latest edition was published in 2004, it\u2019s still a valuable resource. It\u2019s organized by state and goes through the various records types and repositories. Handy tables for each state show each county, along with its formation date (and if it was formed from another county), and the beginning dates for vital, land, probate, and court records. Some states, like Connecticut, do this by town instead of county.\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2ziAT44\" target=\"_blank\">The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy, Third Edition<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Also available through the <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.rootsweb.com\/wiki\/index.php?title=The_Source:_A_Guidebook_to_American_Genealogy\" target=\"_blank\">Ancestry.com Wiki<\/a>, it\u2019s another book where I prefer the hardcopy for the same reasons mentioned above. Still relevant even several years after this edition was released, this book is organized by topic and gives a good overview of each topic. Particularly helpful for beginners and intermediates who are transitioning to more advanced research.\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2OVGCBB\" target=\"_blank\">The Researcher\u2019s Guide to American Genealogy, Fourth Edition<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 This book is similar to <em>The Source<\/em> and there is some overlap in topics. However, they\u2019re each presented differently and it\u2019s sometimes better to have both. Each one covers a few topics the other doesn\u2019t.\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Kn6GVy\" target=\"_blank\">Professional Genealogy: A Manual for Researcher, Writers, Editors, Lecturers, and Librarians<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 NOT just for professionals, this is a wonderful resource even if you have no plans to do genealogy for a living. It covers a variety of topics from research reports to transcriptions to writing family histories, as well as information targeted at the professional such as business management and marketing.\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Fyaepu\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Professional Genealogy: Preparation, Practice &amp; Standards<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 While I have not had the chance to sit down and read this new tome, I do know that it is a complete update from the original ProGen book (above). It was completely revamped with today\u2019s genealogist in mind. A friend also explained that she still refers to both books, so you might want to grab both.\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gOtRcO\" target=\"_blank\">Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace, Third Edition<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 The preferred standard for citing sources in the genealogy world. While it serves as a reference for endless citation scenarios, the first chapter is dedicated to evidence analysis, which should be read and reviewed often.\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gsl1Dg\" target=\"_blank\">Genealogy Standards<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 This book documents a set of generally-understood standards in the genealogy community. While it is the basis for those seeking certification through BCG, it is seen as a guide for quality genealogy research for everyone, from beginners to experts.\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngsgenealogy.org\/mastering-genealogical-proof\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mastering Genealogical Proof<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Released in 2015, this is a workbook to help genealogists understand and use the Genealogical Proof Standard as defined in <em>Genealogy Standards <\/em>(above). Also available for <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DP5WrZ\" target=\"_blank\">Kindle<\/a>.\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ngsgenealogy.org\/mastering-genealogical-documentation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mastering Genealogical Documentation<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Released in 2017, this workbook-style book helps readers understand the logic that goes into crafting citations (which by doing so also helps researchers understand the source and the information and evidence it contains). Also available for <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2qVb9Gh\" target=\"_blank\">Kindle<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to these general resources, there are some topic-specific books that I also highly recommend. Two of the more popular national\/regional societies are the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngsgenealogy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Genealogical Society<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanancestors.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">New England Historic Genealogical Society<\/a>. Professional-related societies include the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apgen.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Association of Professional Genealogists<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historians.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Historical Association<\/a>. I personally use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/photoshop.html?promoid=DJDTV\" target=\"_blank\">Photoshop<\/a> because I also use several other Adobe products in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/creativesuite.html?promoid=JOLIS\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Cloud<\/a>. I\u2019ve heard that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/elements-family.html?promoid=KQQSC\" target=\"_blank\">Photoshop Elements<\/a> is a cheaper alternative to Photoshop and still provides a wide range of capabilities suitable to the needs of genealogists.<\/p>\n<p>A non-genealogy program that may be of interest to genealogists is <a href=\"http:\/\/foldermarker.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Folder Marker<\/a>. Diana left a comment about this program on my 2016 holiday guide. Looking it over, I agree, it looks like something genealogists could get some use out of. My initial thought is to color code my surname folders based on the color associated with my grandparents\u2019 lines (blue for paternal grandfather, green for paternal grandmother,&nbsp; red for maternal grandfather, and yellow for maternal grandmother). But I can also see uses for projects, client work, and other things. As far as genealogy is concerned, here\u2019s my story. I got a Kindle Fire for Christmas in 2011 and had no idea how much I would use it for genealogy. I went an entire week at the Family History Library with only the Fire, while my laptop stayed in the hotel room. It\u2019s also great to have my genealogy database at my fingertips for those times when I\u2019m at a family gathering and people start asking questions\u2026quick, easy access, and they have their answer. Consider other tablets or the <a href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/ipad\" target=\"_blank\">iPad<\/a>.\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gMJG63\" target=\"_blank\">Flip-PalTM Mobile Scanner<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Scan just about anything with this nifty mobile scanner. Yes, it\u2019s small, but their <a title=\"Flip-Pal&trade; Mobile Scanner &ndash; Demo of Stitching Software\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/flip-pal-mobile-scanner-demo-of-stitching-software\/\" target=\"_blank\">stitching software<\/a> is fantastic\u2014it puts multiple scans together to reproduce the original in a digital format. If you plan to use it a lot, I\u2019d also recommend asking for at least two sets of four <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fRCIIJ\" target=\"_blank\">AA rechargeable batteries<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DANimY\" target=\"_blank\">charger<\/a>.\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003CYKBAU\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003CYKBAU&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=julsgenhishub-20&amp;linkId=H2H3O7A4RLXGOE57\" target=\"_blank\">Brother DS-600 Mobile Scanner<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 I\u2019ve had this scanner for several years now and I love it. The great thing about this mobile feed scanner is that you can scan legal pages in one scan. It\u2019s also a great backup for when the Flip-Pal batteries are dead. Although I don\u2019t have one, I hear a lot of people talk about hand-held <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2FzqBBZ\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cwand\u201d scanners<\/a> as another mobile scanner option.\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fMJm7I\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Luxor L340 Home Office Double Sided Magnetic White Board (48\u201d x 36\u201d)<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Bought this in 2016 and LOVE it (read my <a href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/what-genealogist-doesnt-love-a-good-white-board\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a> about it)!
