{"id":552,"date":"2011-12-13T12:54:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-13T18:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/newspaper-search-helps-identify-family-photo\/"},"modified":"2013-07-05T22:00:11","modified_gmt":"2013-07-06T03:00:11","slug":"newspaper-search-helps-identify-family-photo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/newspaper-search-helps-identify-family-photo\/","title":{"rendered":"Newspaper Search Helps Identify Family Photo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago, I discovered digitized copies of newspapers for Cedar Rapids, Iowa at the <a href=\"http:\/\/crpubliclibrary.newspaperarchive.com\/Default.aspx\">Digital Archives of the Cedar Rapids Public Library<\/a> website.\u00a0 I made several discoveries for my Rottman family that lived near Cedar Rapids.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One of those finds has to do with the identification of a car that my mother was photographed in when she was a child.\u00a0 I know that sounds strange, but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<p>Below are two photos of my mom, her brother, and their cousin in an antique (by today\u2019s standards) car.\u00a0 I had no idea where the photo was taken, nor what the year, make, or model was of the car.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-bKDQxIDbqvY\/TuboyBngdbI\/AAAAAAAAGAE\/oum-SwtpLTg\/MILLER%25252C%252520Jean%252520Marie%252520MILLER%252520%252526%252520Richard%252520Alan%252520MILLER%252520Photo%252520006%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"452\" height=\"276\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-0qb4Ae5nqM8\/TuboyRPXqBI\/AAAAAAAAGAM\/mw3V8cMIYj0\/MILLER%25252C%252520Jean%252520Marie%252520MILLER%252520%252526%252520Richard%252520Alan%252520MILLER%252520Photo%252520007%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"452\" height=\"287\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While I was doing my newspaper searches, I came across an article in the 14 August 1955 issue of <em>The Cedar Rapids Gazette<\/em> entitled, \u201cAntique and Classic Autos at Fair.\u201d\u00a0 In part, the article states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA 1904 Cadillac owned by Donald and Robert Rottman of Lisbon.\u00a0 This car was purchased new by the Rottmans\u2019 grandfather and is in its third generation in the family.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When I saw the year of the car, I had a d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu moment and thought about the photos above of my mom and the old car.\u00a0 Since there was no photo in the article, I put my thoughts aside, and continued my newspaper search.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I came across another reference to the car in a photo caption, which was in the 11 July 1966 issue of <em>The Cedar Rapids Gazette<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-8eqK-nLwsTE\/TuboyrYViBI\/AAAAAAAAGAU\/Kmf8gTzLOnw\/Rottman%252520Article%252520About%252520Antique%252520Car%252520in%252520Parade%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"413\" height=\"471\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The caption reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAN AFTERNOON PARADE was one of the Legion day features in Mt. Vernon Saturday.\u00a0 In this photo, from left, Roland Rottman, 9, David Rottman, 8, both of Mt.
