{"id":550,"date":"2011-12-20T08:40:00","date_gmt":"2011-12-20T14:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/2011-achievements\/"},"modified":"2013-07-05T21:57:46","modified_gmt":"2013-07-06T02:57:46","slug":"2011-achievements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/2011-achievements\/","title":{"rendered":"2011 Achievements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-t9JrnHgj5UY\/TvAuQHkTZkI\/AAAAAAAAGAs\/aD87RR5JasQ\/MP900341371%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"110\" height=\"155\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/> Another year has almost passed, and like any good genealogist, it\u2019s time to review my achievements for the year and set my goals for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n<p>I resolved to do several things during 2011, and I must say, I\u2019ve accomplished a lot, although not <em>everything<\/em> I set out to do.\u00a0 Let\u2019s review.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Submit an entry for the 2011 ISFHWE Excellence in Writing Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well this was an interesting one.\u00a0 Initially, the goal was do enter the 2011 competition, regardless of whether I decided to enter the 2010 competition (at the very last minute).\u00a0 While I haven\u2019t entered the 2011 competition yet (I still have a few months), I did end up submitting an entry just days before the deadline\u2014and I place third!\u00a0 You can read more about that <a title=\"Wow! I Actually Won?\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/wow-i-actually-won\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Submit a research-related article to the Illinois State Genealogical Society quarterly journal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All of the articles I\u2019ve written for this publication have been more technical in nature and not focused on my personal research.\u00a0 My goal for this year was to submit at least one article that is about my own genealogy research regarding my Illinois ancestors.\u00a0 This is one goal I did not accomplish, simply because life got in the way.\u00a0 A similar goal is on the list for 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attend the 2011 FGS Conference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2011 FGS Conference was held in Springfield, Illinois and by golly, I attended.\u00a0 I also had several responsibilities to attend to since I was part of the local conference committee dealing with publicity and signage.\u00a0 This was my first national genealogy conference and I was very glad I attended.\u00a0 I learned a lot, made some new friends, and hung out with many of my genealogy buddies I\u2019d met through blogging and Facebook.\u00a0 You can read more about my experience <a title=\"FGS 2011 \u2013 My Overall Experience\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/fgs-2011-my-overall-experience\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Help someone else with their own genealogy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While I didn\u2019t necessarily do any research for others, I did assist as a second set of eyes in a few cases, which helped further the person\u2019s own research.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finish ProGen Study Group<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My group finished in April 2011.\u00a0 It was a good experience and I\u2019m glad I pursued it.\u00a0 I learned a lot and it helped me focus on what I want to do in terms of a genealogy profession in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop slacking on this blog<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first part of the year, I really tried to post more, but with all of the conference work and other obligations, I just didn\u2019t do as much as I wanted.\u00a0 As soon as the conference was over, I picked up momentum, although an out-of-area move put everything on the back burner yet again.\u00a0 Hopefully things will pick up here after the holiday season.\u00a0 I posted 100 posts this year (not including this one or any between now and the end of the year).\u00a0 Here are some of my more popular posts from the 2011 year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"TV Shows Broaden Historical Horizons\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/tv-shows-broaden-historical-horizons\/\">TV Shows Broaden Historical Horizons<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Wow!
