Back in 2010, in honor of Women\u2019s History Month, Lisa Alzo created a list of writing prompts for each day during the month of March.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t participate in 2010, so I\u2019m going to take the opportunity to participate this year, since Lisa was kind enough to resurrect her prompts for 2012<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nMy grandmother, Marie (Rottman) Miller kept a Vacation Journal from 1959 to 1981.\u00a0 She would record everything from places they stopped for gas, to what they did at their destination; she even included all expenses.\u00a0 Below is an excerpt from a trip to Iowa to visit family.<\/p>\n

July 4th & 5th 1960<\/p>\n

Left Elmhurst at 5:50 AM \u2013 Mileage 497
\nTollway 30\u00a2 \u2013 Tollway 10\u00a2
\nStopped at Hinkley, Ill for Breakfast.\u00a0 Very Good \u2013 1.55 + 30 tip = 1.85.\u00a0 Were on the road again at 7:20 AM.
\nStopped at Rock Falls.\u00a0 Gas \u2013 5.20 \u2013 Mileage 603
\nToll Bridge to cross Mississippi 20\u00a2
\nArrived in Lisbon Iowa 10:15 AM.
\nAunt Mabel was down at Ethel\u2019s in Ivanhoe.\u00a0 Had lunch there.\u00a0 Then went to farm & down to the timber.\u00a0 Nobody home.\u00a0 Came back & got hotel at Mt. Vernon, Iowa – $12 nice, modern, clean, T.V. radio tub & shower.\u00a0 10\u00a2 Coke.\u00a0 Next morning had breakfast in Lisbon $2.29.\u00a0 Came back to motel, bought 2 glasses 30\u00a2 & packed up.\u00a0 Left for Mississippi Palisades Kepler Park.\u00a0 Saw the Lodge were we had our first reunion.\u00a0 Took some pictures & then came back to Aunt Mabel\u2019s.\u00a0 Had our second breakfast there.\u00a0 Looked [at] three old albums of Uncle John, Dad, & Cousins.\u00a0 Left Lisbon, Iowa about 1:00 PM.\u00a0 Stopped at Clinton, Iowa at The Green Basket.\u00a0 3.16 + 30 tip = $3.46
\nToll Bridge – 20\u00a2<\/p>\n

Tollway (East-West) 30\u00a2 – 10\u00a2
\nMissed York St. & had to go a round about way on another toll road 30\u00a2 to get home.\u00a0 Arrived home safe & sound 7:30 PM<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I haven\u2019t had the chance to actually read through or transcribe this journal.\u00a0 But even though this particular entry is short, there is a lot of information contained, such as that both Mabel and Ethel were living in July 1960, and\u2026the kicker\u2026Mabel had three family photo albums\u2026I wonder where those are now!<\/p>\n
