T he Adlington case looks like all the rest – a straightforward tree to pass down the generations – but Kate isn’t expecting the extra ‘help’ she gets, or the things she finds out as a result … A light-hearted novella involving relationships, families and a not inconsiderate smattering of genealogical mystery, the first in the Kate Dean & Co Kindred Spirits series will, hopefully, leave you wanting more …

My Rating: The premise of the book excited me, a genealogical mystery mixed with the paranormal—and that it’s the first in a series, even better. For the most part, I was enjoying the story, intrigued by the mystery, and poof—it was all over! It wasn’t so much the length of the book, it was more like the sensation of falling off a cliff; the ending was abrupt and not developed like the rest of the book. It was like the author had a word limit or a deadline and said, “oh, better wrap it up…[type two-sentence conclusion] okay, done.”

It was such a disappointment, especially with a price tag of $2.99 for a Kindle book that amounts to about 74 pages. Even more frustrating, is the author is a pretty good writer and I don’t recall any major errors with grammar or logic (it’s been a few weeks since I finished the book). Oddly, and probably because of the genealogy/paranormal premise, I’d like to check out the second book and see if it’s any better, but I think I’ll wait and see if the price drops or if it’s offered for free as a promotion.
