{"id":4637,"date":"2013-07-25T19:18:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-26T00:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/?p=4637"},"modified":"2013-07-22T23:53:16","modified_gmt":"2013-07-23T04:53:16","slug":"genealogy-by-the-states-week-29-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-29-iowa\/","title":{"rendered":"Genealogy By the States &ndash; Week 29 &ndash; Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Iowa\" style=\"border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; display: block; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; margin-right: auto\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Iowa\" src=\"http:\/\/julietarr.com\/genealogy\/blog\/images\/Genealogy-By-the-States--Week-29--Iowa_14790\/Iowa.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"82\"><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have any direct ancestors who participated in the Civil War.&nbsp; The closest I come is the first husband of my third great-grandmother, Sarah Norton (Webster) Coffinger Mulligan.&nbsp; Before Sarah married my third great-grandfather, James Mulligan, she was married to Abram Coffinger. <\/p>\n<p>Abram, Sarah, and their children lived in Iowa for a short time.&nbsp; A little digging recently has led to the possibility that he had family in Iowa, but I have not confirmed that theory yet.&nbsp; At any rate, while they were living in Iowa, the Civil War broke out.&nbsp; Abram enlisted as a Private on 22 August 1862.&nbsp; He was mustered in with Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment of Iowa on 12 September 1862.&nbsp; On 28 September 1863, he died of disease, and was also mustered out.&nbsp; What\u2019s strange is that he appears to have died back in Michigan, but I\u2019m not sure why.&nbsp; More research will need to be conducted in order to understand the events and learn more about his service.<\/p>\n<p>One resource that I came across while researching Abram was a series of books called <em>Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion<\/em>.&nbsp; There are six volumes, all of which are digitized and available online at <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\" target=\"_blank\">Internet Archive<\/a> as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/aby1249.0001.001.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 1<\/a> &#8211; Covers 1st through 8th Infantry Regiments.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/aby1249.0002.001.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 2<\/a> &#8211; Covers 9th through 16th Infantry Regiments.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/aby1249.0003.001.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 3<\/a> &#8211; Covers 17th through 31st Infantry Regiments.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/aby1249.0004.001.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 4<\/a> &#8211; Covers 1st through 9th Calvary Regiments.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/aby1249.0005.001.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 5<\/a> &#8211; Covers 32nd through 48th Infantry Regiments.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/aby1249.0006.001.umich.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Volume 6<\/a> &#8211; Covers miscellaneous organizations of the Mexican War, Indian campaigns, War of the Rebellion and the Spanish-American and Philippine wars; together with historical sketches of volunteer organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps these books will help you research your Civil War ancestors from Iowa.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiddengenealogynuggets.com\/genealogyblog\/category\/genealogy-by-the-states\/\" target=\"_blank\">Genealogy By the States<\/a><\/em><em> is a theme created by Jim Sanders over at the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiddengenealogynuggets.com\/genealogyblog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hidden Genealogy Nuggets<\/a><em><\/em><em> blog.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don\u2019t have any direct ancestors who participated in the Civil War.&nbsp; The closest I come is the first husband of my third great-grandmother, Sarah Norton (Webster) Coffinger Mulligan.&nbsp; Before Sarah married my third great-grandfather, James Mulligan, she was married to Abram Coffinger.
