For 26 weeks I will take you on a family history journey through the alphabet, one letter at a time.\u00a0 I have decided that each post will be educational in nature, focusing on topics related to resources, methodology, tools, etc.\u00a0 Although the challenge is complete, there are still some people who are finishing up and Alona, the host, is encouraging others to participate anyway.\u00a0 Additional information on the challenge, can be found at <\/em>Take the \u2018Family History Through the Alphabet\u2019 Challenge<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

\"y\"This week it\u2019s all about YOU!\u00a0 You\u2019ve spent countless hours filling in the details of your ancestors, but have you taken the time to record your own details?\u00a0 I actually did this a few years ago as a departure from research (sometimes you just need a break!!).\u00a0 I spent some time entering a variety of events into my genealogy database.\u00a0 In some cases, they were memories.\u00a0 Other times I had some source of information, such as a diploma or newspaper clipping.\u00a0 It was a good exercise for me, because as I get older, certain details just seem to fade away.\u00a0 Fortunately, I captured them, and you should too!<\/p>\n

Following is a list of event types to consider adding to your own entry in your database:<\/p>\n

  • Residences<\/li>\n
  • Memberships (fraternity\/sorority, scouts, organizations, clubs, etc.)<\/li>\n
  • Schooling<\/li>\n
  • Event Attendance (weddings, funerals, bridal\/baby showers, birthday parties, etc.)<\/li>\n
  • Vacations<\/li>\n
  • Employment<\/li>\n
  • Awards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    I even recorded my confirmation, engagement, and my pets (okay, that one may be odd, but hey, they\u2019re part of my family\u2014I promise, they\u2019re not recorded as children!).\u00a0 My timeline is the most detailed in my database.\u00a0 Boy, what I wouldn\u2019t give to have these little tidbits for my ancestors.<\/p>\n
