{"id":404,"date":"2013-01-17T15:38:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T21:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-2-pennsylvania\/"},"modified":"2013-07-03T14:41:43","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T19:41:43","slug":"genealogy-by-the-states-week-2-pennsylvania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-2-pennsylvania\/","title":{"rendered":"Genealogy By the States \u2013 Week 2 \u2013 Pennsylvania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-m8OpNSuCiUc\/UPhhNP48RFI\/AAAAAAAAHnM\/DqUgaYYBU2U\/s1600-h\/Pennsylvania4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Pennsylvania\" alt=\"Pennsylvania\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-l42A8yn96S0\/UPhhNrpQeuI\/AAAAAAAAHnU\/TCYdty-398A\/Pennsylvania_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"100\" height=\"55\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ah, Pennsylvania, that pesky state where two of my great-grandaunts claim to have been born.<\/p>\n<p>First, Malissa Elizabeth ROTTMAN, both the 1880 US census and the 1885 Iowa state census state her place of birth as Pennsylvania.<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0 An index entry in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/collection\/show#uri=http:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/searchapi\/search\/collection\/1674842\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa marriages database<\/a> on FamilySearch states Philadelphia as her place of birth<sup>2<\/sup> (no, I have not seen the actual record\u2026ran out of time at the FHL last February).\u00a0 Yet I have not found a birth record for her in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Her sister, Mabel ROTTMAN, according to the same two censuses, was born in Iowa.\u00a0 Later censuses also list Iowa as her place of birth.\u00a0 Yet for some reason, her obituary states her place of birth as Philadelphia.<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0 I have yet to find a birth record for her in either place.<\/p>\n<p>This particular family is incredibly difficult to research.\u00a0 According to the 1880 and 1885 censuses mentioned above, their father, Philip ROTTMAN, was born in Bavaria, and their mother Eva, was born in France.\u00a0 I have no clue when or where they married or when they immigrated to the US.\u00a0 These same censuses also suggest they where all over the place, based on the places of birth for their children:<\/p>\n<table width=\"480\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\"><strong>Child<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\"><strong>Year of Birth<\/strong><\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\"><strong>Place of Birth<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\">John<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\">1870<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\">Georgia (possibly Henry Co.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\">Anna<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\">1874<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\">Missouri<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\">Malissa Elizabeth<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\">1875<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\">Pennsylvania (possibly Philadelphia)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\">Charles Henry<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\">1877<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\">Iowa (probably Linn Co.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\">Mabel Louise<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\">1879<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\">Iowa (probably Linn Co.;obit suggests Philadelphia, Penn.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"131\">George<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"91\">1882<\/td>\n<td valign=\"top\" width=\"258\">Iowa (probably Linn Co.)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>I have not been able to locate birth records for any of the children.\u00a0 The next step is to figure out what church(es) they might have attended when they were living in Mt. Vernon, Iowa (where the last three children were likely born) and try to find some baptism records.<\/p>\n<p>Another oddity of this family is the maiden name of the mother, Eva.\u00a0 On some children\u2019s records she\u2019s listed as Reeder, while on others, she\u2019s listed as Lasser.\u00a0 Could Philip have married two different woman with the same first name?\u00a0 Could Eva have been married previously and one name is her maiden name, while the other is another married name?\u00a0 Who knows!<\/p>\n<p>So do I have a connection to Pennsylvania?\u00a0 Sure, I have a few here and there.\u00a0 But through this particular family?\u00a0 Perhaps.\u00a0 Once I\u2019m able to dig a little deeper into Philip and Eva, maybe there will be a bigger connection to Pennsylvania, perhaps siblings of one or the other.\u00a0 And if I do find some sort of connection, there are some great records already online through Ancestry and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/collection\/list#page=1&amp;countryId=23\" target=\"_blank\">FamilySearch<\/a>, as well as plenty of resources at the Family History Library that I can start with.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Sources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 1880 U.S. census, population schedule, Mt Vernon, Linn County, Iowa, enumeration district (ED) 264, p. 14, dwelling 118, family 121, Phillip Rotman; digital images, Ancestry (www.ancestry.com : accessed 2 February 2010); citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm T9, roll 351.\u00a0 Also, 1885 state census, Iowa, population schedule, Franklin, Linn County, p. 321 (stamped), dwelling 81, family 81, line 6, Phillip Rotman; digital images, Ancestry (www.ancestry.com : accessed 11 December\u00a0 2009).<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 &#8220;Iowa Marriages 1809-1992,&#8221; database, FamilySearch (familysearch.org : accessed September 2, 2010), Rushek-Rottman, 1896.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 &#8220;Mable Haase Rites Held Wednesday,&#8221; (Mt.
