{"id":401,"date":"2013-01-22T18:57:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-23T00:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-gedfamilies\/"},"modified":"2014-05-28T23:45:51","modified_gmt":"2014-05-29T04:45:51","slug":"using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-gedfamilies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-gedfamilies\/","title":{"rendered":"Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 GedFamilies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last April, I <a title=\"Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 Families\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-families\/\" target=\"_blank\">posted about the Families app<\/a> that was designed to work with the software Legacy Family Tree.\u00a0 Since I use Legacy, I spent the $15 for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B006GYOX5W\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B006GYOX5W&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=julsgenhishub-20&amp;linkId=N3FY4TQCJ56X3RJ3\" target=\"_blank\">Families app<\/a> and was thrilled.\u00a0 I always have my database with me.\u00a0 And, as I mentioned in the April post, it was the only thing I used during my week at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GedFamilies\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-sgXVbKsSh_Y\/UP8ng5zU-9I\/AAAAAAAAHsM\/soI8ofVwhRI\/GedFamilies%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" alt=\"GedFamilies\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/>A few months ago, the company that developed Families released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00AGCGLV4\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B00AGCGLV4&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=julsgenhishub-20&amp;linkId=GNZCBYZJ3WM2JWNX\" target=\"_blank\">GedFamilies<\/a> (Android, iOS, $7.99).\u00a0 From what I can tell (based on the product description, screenshots, and the \u201ctest drive\u201d I took on Amazon) it is nearly identical to Families.\u00a0 The big difference between the two apps is that Families only works with Legacy Family Tree databases, while GedFamilies works with a GEDCOM file.\u00a0 That basically means that if you use ANY genealogy database software that can generate a GEDCOM 5.5.1 file, you can use the GedFamilies app and have your family tree on your Kindle Fire.\u00a0 Just like the Families app, you will need to download and install a syncing program on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>If I wasn\u2019t using Legacy and the Families app already, I would certainly be jumping all over this app.\u00a0 Since Families and GedFamilies are nearly identical, and the syncing process is almost the same, be sure to read <a title=\"Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 Families\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-families\/\" target=\"_blank\">my post about the Families app<\/a> to get a better idea of how and why I use it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>See also:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 Introduction\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-introduction\/\" target=\"_blank\">Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 Introduction<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 Families\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-families\/\" target=\"_blank\">Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 Families<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy \u2013 gReader\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/using-the-kindle-fire-for-genealogy-greader\/\" target=\"_blank\">Using the Kindle Fire for Genealogy &#8211;
