{"id":393,"date":"2013-01-31T14:07:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-31T20:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-4-georgia\/"},"modified":"2013-07-22T18:03:20","modified_gmt":"2013-07-22T23:03:20","slug":"genealogy-by-the-states-week-4-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-4-georgia\/","title":{"rendered":"Genealogy By the States \u2013 Week 4 \u2013 Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Georgia\" alt=\"Georgia\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-7oE2VbK33mg\/UQoYN1GAP6I\/AAAAAAAAHws\/Rcv0RzlflHQ\/Georgia%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"100\" height=\"55\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t have much connection to Georgia, so this week I thought I\u2019d share something that\u2019s a little new to me and talk about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagensociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia Genealogical Society<\/a>.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that I\u2019d never heard of this society, it\u2019s just that until recently, I didn\u2019t know what they were up to.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GGS\" alt=\"GGS\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-cLyJ_5gzzFM\/UQoYOdHiywI\/AAAAAAAAHw0\/emQBMrDRZqs\/GGS%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"150\" height=\"121\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagensociety.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia Genealogical Society<\/a> (GGS) seems to be one of a few state genealogical societies that is jumping into the 21st century and embracing new technologies and finding innovative ways to reach their members and provide valuable services.\u00a0 About a month ago I discovered that like <a href=\"http:\/\/scgsgenealogy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Southern California Genealogical Society<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ugagenealogy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Utah Genealogical Association<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/ilgensoc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Illinois State Genealogical Society<\/a>, GGS is offering monthly webinars as a form of education for the members and the genealogy community as a whole.\u00a0 This is a great way to reach out to members who live beyond the borders of Georgia.\u00a0 The GGS webinars are free to the public when they are broadcast live and GGS members have access to the recordings through the members-only section of the GGS website.\u00a0 Visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagensociety.org\/webinar_schedule.htm\" target=\"_blank\">GGS webinar calendar<\/a> to see what\u2019s planned for 2013.<\/p>\n<p>And while I was on the GGS website to see what webinars they were offering, I also noticed that they have a members-only section that contains a variety of resources including <em>Index to Georgia&#8217;s Federal Naturalization Records to 1950 (Excluding Military Petitions) <\/em>and digital copies of the first 20 years of their quarterly journal, as well as some other resources.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve even embraced social media tools such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/GaGenSociety\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GaGenSociety\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> to broaden their outreach to the genealogical community and a new generation of genealogists.\u00a0 And of course, just like most state societies, GGS provides members with a quarterly journal, as well as a quarterly newsletter.\u00a0 Their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagensociety.org\/scribe.htm\" target=\"_blank\">newsletter is digital<\/a> and appears to be available to non-members as well (just click cancel when the login pops up).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s nice to see a state society thinking outside the box and finding was to provide valuable services to its members!<\/p>\n<p>Side Note:\u00a0 Okay, so I wasn\u2019t going to write about my crazy Rottman family for this post because I already covered them in the <a title=\"Genealogy By the States \u2013 Week 2 \u2013 Pennsylvania\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-2-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pennsylvania post<\/a> two weeks ago and will be covering them in this week\u2019s Surname Saturday post.\u00a0 But, on a whim, after completing this post, I decided to head over and see what was new at FamilySearch for the state of Georgia.\u00a0 And while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/collection\/show#uri=http:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/searchapi\/search\/collection\/1674802\" target=\"_blank\">Georgia, Births and Christenings, 1754-1960<\/a> database wasn\u2019t exactly new, it was new to me, so I figured I\u2019d give it a go since one of the children was supposedly born in Henry Co.
