{"id":375,"date":"2013-02-21T12:18:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-21T18:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-7-maryland\/"},"modified":"2013-07-02T23:42:48","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T04:42:48","slug":"genealogy-by-the-states-week-7-maryland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-7-maryland\/","title":{"rendered":"Genealogy By the States \u2013 Week 7 \u2013 Maryland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Maryland\" alt=\"Maryland\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-SeM9iec07DA\/USBuu1g9UvI\/AAAAAAAAIII\/fqTc2XEw_08\/Maryland%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"100\" height=\"55\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t think I had any connections to Maryland, but a quick search of events in my database proved me wrong.\u00a0 I do have some of my own connections, some very distant cousins that I know very little about.<\/p>\n<p>And then I saw a name I didn\u2019t recognize at all:\u00a0 Johann Diel Bohn.\u00a0 Who is the world is that?\u00a0 Turns out, it\u2019s on my husband\u2019s side, and perhaps Johann is hubby\u2019s eighth great-grandfather.\u00a0 I say \u201cperhaps\u201d because this line was pretty much \u201cborrowed\u201d from a tree on Ancestry and I have not done any research on this family beyond hubby\u2019s second great-grandmother, Eliza Ann Matilda Boone and her probable father Martin Alexander Boone.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Having never used any Maryland records before, I figured I\u2019d look around and see what I could find for Johann.\u00a0 I thought that if I found something, it would either help me work down to hubby\u2019s second great-grandmother, or if I ever do get back to Johann, some work would already be done.<\/p>\n<p>All I knew from this Ancestry tree (which sourced other trees, ugh!), was the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Johann Diel Bohn, was born in 1711 in Obermoshel (should that be Obermoschel?), Germany and died before 5 April 1764 in Frederick County, Maryland.\u00a0 He married Anna Maria Dicker before 1741 in Germany.\u00a0 I only had one son (Johann Jacob) in my database, the line that apparently descends to my husband, but looking back at the online tree, there were other children.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I headed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">FamilySearch<\/a> to see if they had any records online for that time period.\u00a0 Boy was I in luck, early probate records.\u00a0 This was probably a good place to start since Johann\u2019s death date was a \u201cbefore\u201d date, I figured that it was because the date was based on when his estate was probated.<\/p>\n<p>After a little bit of searching, I managed to find two documents.\u00a0 The first was the administration account, which was dated 24 August 1766.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/pal:\/MM9.3.1\/TH-1942-24262-26290-91?cc=1803986&amp;wc=M9MV-XNN:302616836\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"BOONE, Johann 5067 - 1766 Probate Administration Account\" alt=\"BOONE, Johann 5067 - 1766 Probate Administration Account\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-mPJ2UHzPwyQ\/USBuvEximKI\/AAAAAAAAIIQ\/RG2BYH_8EtA\/BOONE%25252C%252520Johann%2525205067%252520-%2525201766%252520Probate%252520Administration%252520Account%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"490\" height=\"378\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frederick County, Maryland, Administrators accounts, Book A1, 1750-1767, p. 378-379.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then I found his will, dated 1 November 1761, apparently written before his \u201cvoyage to Germany.\u201d\u00a0 It appears that it was filed(?, or recorded?) on 13 April 1764.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/pal:\/MM9.3.1\/TH-1942-24293-55390-28?cc=1803986&amp;wc=M9MV-FHF:n190954229\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: 0px none;\" title=\"BOONE, Johann 5067 - 1761 Will\" alt=\"BOONE, Johann 5067 - 1761 Will\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-twQy-Iza6AU\/USBuveBQegI\/AAAAAAAAIIY\/afHUumob5vw\/BOONE%25252C%252520Johann%2525205067%252520-%2525201761%252520Will%25255B13%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"490\" height=\"771\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frederick County, Maryland, Will Records, Book A1, 1744-1777, p. 209.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I did not find an inventory, which is odd because it is referred to in the final account from the administrator.\u00a0 A look through the <a href=\"http:\/\/msa.maryland.gov\/megafile\/msa\/stagsere\/se1\/se4\/000000\/html\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Probate Records, Colonial, Index, 1634-1777<\/a>, which are digital images of the index cards through the Maryland State Archives website, shows there is at least one additional record, Balances of Final Distribution, which I assume is referring to the books held by the Prerogative Court.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"balance\" alt=\"balance\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-_UPuma-J1PY\/USBuvlGp91I\/AAAAAAAAIIg\/WZcjDbyUltU\/balance%25255B7%25255D.gif?imgmax=800\" width=\"370\" height=\"236\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And since duplicate records were kept by the county and the Prerogative Court, I\u2019m not sure whether the county has them and they just weren\u2019t filmed by FHL (they\u2019re not digitized or filmed) or if the county lost or destroyed them.\u00a0 But the FHL does have the Prerogative Court \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/catalog\/261030\" target=\"_blank\">Balance Books of Estates After Payment to Heirs<\/a>,\u201d which I\u2019m assuming is what the index card is referring to.<\/p>\n<p>There is another index card labeled \u201cAccounts,\u201d and I assume this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/catalog\/264182\" target=\"_blank\">duplicate held by the Prerogative Court<\/a> (makes sense since book 55 falls with in the year range).\u00a0 I gather that it is the duplicate of the the first record I discussed in this post.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"accounts\" alt=\"accounts\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/-cYnKcCgXnwk\/USBuwGatkJI\/AAAAAAAAIIo\/o_Q_jAZupCE\/accounts%25255B4%25255D.gif?imgmax=800\" width=\"370\" height=\"236\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And finally, there is an index card for the will.\u00a0 However, it does not refer to either the county will books or the Prerogative Court will books.\u00a0 Instead, it refers to a box and folder at the county level.\u00a0 Could this be the original will?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"will\" alt=\"will\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-0yGWl8GPVl8\/USBuwYZFPEI\/AAAAAAAAIIw\/1WoQG6ZjPwE\/will%25255B4%25255D.gif?imgmax=800\" width=\"370\" height=\"234\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So this was a fun little jaunt into a state I\u2019ve never researched and on a person who may or may not be hubby\u2019s eighth great-grandfather.\u00a0 Certainly a learning experience nonetheless, so I can\u2019t complain.\u00a0 Clearly more work needs to be done, but for now, I\u2019m happy with what I\u2019ve found and the start I\u2019ve made.\u00a0 And if this Johann is in fact hubby\u2019s ancestor and was from Germany, it\u2019s nice to know that I\u2019m not the only stubborn German in the household \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiddengenealogynuggets.com\/genealogyblog\/category\/genealogy-by-the-states\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Genealogy By the States<\/em><\/a><em> is a theme created by Jim Sanders over at the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiddengenealogynuggets.com\/genealogyblog\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Hidden Genealogy Nuggets<\/em><\/a><em> blog.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I didn\u2019t think I had any connections to Maryland, but a quick search of events in my database proved me wrong.\u00a0 I do have some of my own connections, some very distant cousins that I know very little about.
