{"id":363,"date":"2013-03-06T10:11:00","date_gmt":"2013-03-06T16:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/family-history-through-the-alphabet-historypin\/"},"modified":"2013-07-02T23:31:32","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T04:31:32","slug":"family-history-through-the-alphabet-historypin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/family-history-through-the-alphabet-historypin\/","title":{"rendered":"Family History Through the Alphabet \u2013 Historypin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Family-History-Through-the-Alphabet\" alt=\"Family-History-Through-the-Alphabet\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-3eXww2LxoqY\/UTamzEVC5-I\/AAAAAAAAIVI\/eA9k2zCON0o\/Family-History-Through-the-Alphabet%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"304\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>For 26 weeks I will take you on a family history journey through the alphabet, one letter at a time.\u00a0 I have decided that each post will be educational in nature, focusing on topics related to resources, methodology, tools, etc.\u00a0 Although the challenge is complete, there are still some people who are finishing up and Alona, the host, is encouraging others to participate anyway.\u00a0 Additional information on the challenge, can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gouldgenealogy.com\/2012\/05\/take-the-family-history-through-the-alphabet-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Take the \u2018Family History Through the Alphabet\u2019 Challenge<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"h\" alt=\"h\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-3B-oEmdYH2k\/UTamzSy0NsI\/AAAAAAAAIVQ\/ZvsENrkcCE0\/h%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"50\" height=\"49\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/>This week I thought I\u2019d talk a little bit about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Historypin<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a website community that integrates with Google Maps and allows you to upload images and \u201cpin\u201d them to a location.\u00a0 You can see other pins by looking at a location on the map or visit a user\u2019s profile to see what they\u2019ve pinned.\u00a0 You can even comment on pins.\u00a0 To get a better idea of Historypin, watch this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FdT3eKdto4w\">90 second video<\/a> they created, which does a great job of explaining it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"HistoryPin\" alt=\"HistoryPin\" src=\"http:\/\/lh5.ggpht.com\/-zZozDQMzM5s\/UTamzr5EgZI\/AAAAAAAAIVY\/gdZgP1X4DX0\/HistoryPin%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"249\" height=\"68\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been aware of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Historypin<\/a> for awhile, and had explored it a few times in the past.\u00a0 Yesterday, I took some time to get a better feel for it and even uploaded some of my own photos (you can see my pins <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/channels\/view\/12622151\/#%7Cphotos\/list\/cache\/0\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).\u00a0 I also created two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/channels\/view\/12622151\/#%7Ccollections\/all\/cache\/0\/\" target=\"_blank\">collections<\/a>.\u00a0 Collections allow you to group pins anyway you like, and they can include your own photos or those posted by other users (you have to mark the pin as a favorite).<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a neat website and many people are participating and adding photos.\u00a0 In fact, several schools, universities\/colleges, libraries, archives, and historical societies are using Historypin as a way to bring their collections to the public.\u00a0 Here are a few that you may be interested in taking a look at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/channels\/view\/id\/7591437\/#%7Cphotos\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Archives (US)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/channels\/view\/id\/6368736\/#%7Cphotos\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\">Historic New England<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.historypin.com\/channels\/view\/id\/9387002\/#%7Cphotos\/list\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ryerson &amp;
