{"id":342,"date":"2013-04-04T10:02:00","date_gmt":"2013-04-04T15:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-13-rhode-island\/"},"modified":"2013-07-13T14:41:01","modified_gmt":"2013-07-13T19:41:01","slug":"genealogy-by-the-states-week-13-rhode-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-13-rhode-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Genealogy By the States \u2013 Week 13 \u2013 Rhode Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Rhode Island\" alt=\"Rhode Island\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-0F_aj5I_cLE\/UVpMCva2E8I\/AAAAAAAAIeU\/YCXLcrAz0Sg\/Rhode%252520Island%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"100\" height=\"55\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another state in which I have no family ties, however, my husband does.\u00a0 Hubby\u2019s third great-grandfather, William Lindsey lived in Smithfield, Providence Rhode Island, for a time before relocating to Illinois by 1860.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t really know a whole lot about William, his wife Hannah, or their children.\u00a0 It looked as though two of their known children were born in Rhode Island, so I though I\u2019d check out the various records and indexes on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/search\/collection\/list#page=1&amp;countryId=24\" target=\"_blank\">FamilySearch<\/a> to see what I could dig up.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While the birth index was a bust, I tried the marriage index and found an index entry for an Emma Lindsey (father William) and a Matilda Lindsey (father William).\u00a0 Both marriages occurred in Smithfield within three days of one another, and both women married men with the surname Northup, who appear to be brothers (father for both is listed as Sylvester).\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/pal:\/MM9.1.1\/F8VJ-WFN\" target=\"_blank\">Matilda married Charles F<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/familysearch.org\/pal:\/MM9.1.1\/F8VJ-WF2\" target=\"_blank\">Emma married Nathaniel C<\/a>.\u00a0 The woman married in 1849 and would be about the right age to fill the large gap I have for William and Hannah\u2019s children.\u00a0 This would also explain why there was no mention of Emma or Matilda in the 1850 census household of William.\u00a0 This is of course not to say that either are the daughter of the William in question, but it is highly suspect and worth investigating further.<\/p>\n<p>The connection to Emma and William is even stronger, given that an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GSln=northup&amp;GSiman=1&amp;GScid=108660&amp;GRid=5702737&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">Emma<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GSln=northup&amp;GSiman=1&amp;GScid=108660&amp;GRid=5702750&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">Nathaniel<\/a> are buried in the same cemetery in Knox County, Illinois, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GSln=lind&amp;GSiman=1&amp;GScid=108660&amp;GRid=5702777&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">William<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GSln=lind&amp;GSiman=1&amp;GScid=108660&amp;GRid=5702792&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">Hannah<\/a>, and their son <a href=\"http:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/cgi-bin\/fg.cgi?page=gr&amp;GSln=lind&amp;GSiman=1&amp;GScid=108660&amp;GRid=5703009&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">John<\/a>.\u00a0 Although William and Hannah have moved to Illinois by the 1860 census, Emma and Nathaniel are still in Rhode Island.\u00a0 I was unable to find them in subsequent censuses in the short time I searched to write this Rhode Island post.\u00a0 And it was quite a coincidence that I even found them listed in the Knox County cemetery (I guess having Ancestry link to Find A Grave in their search is kind of a good thing!).<\/p>\n<p>Certainly more research needs to be conducted.\u00a0 But in just a little over an hour, I was able to find a few additional clues that might help put this family together and may have just added additional children that were previously unknown.\u00a0 Only more research will tell.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiddengenealogynuggets.com\/genealogyblog\/category\/genealogy-by-the-states\/\">Genealogy By the States<\/a><\/em><em> is a theme created by Jim Sanders over at the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiddengenealogynuggets.com\/genealogyblog\/\">Hidden Genealogy Nuggets<\/a><em><\/em><em> blog.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another state in which I have no family ties, however, my husband does.\u00a0 Hubby\u2019s third great-grandfather, William Lindsey lived in Smithfield, Providence Rhode Island, for a time before relocating to Illinois by 1860.
