{"id":19,"date":"2013-02-08T04:33:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-08T04:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/family-history-writing-challenge-week-1\/"},"modified":"2013-07-02T23:49:44","modified_gmt":"2013-07-03T04:49:44","slug":"family-history-writing-challenge-week-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/family-history-writing-challenge-week-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Family History Writing Challenge \u2013 Week 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/-iQV6GWSWjlY\/UQsVPlhVtUI\/AAAAAAAAHxw\/9psct2ZeqOs\/FHWC2013_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/familyhistorywritingchallenge.blogspot.ca\/p\/challenge.html\" target=\"_blank\">Family History Writing Challenge<\/a> started on February 1, and I am off to a rocky start\u2026well sort of.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the scoop for the first week.<\/p>\n<p>On February 1, I wrote my blog post for the Surname Saturday theme, <a title=\"Surname Saturday: Rottman (Bavaria \/ Georgia \/ Iowa \/ Illinois)\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/surname-saturday-rottman-bavaria-georgia-iowa-illinois\/\" target=\"_blank\">Surname Saturday: Rottman (Bavaria \/ Georgia \/ Iowa \/ Illinois)<\/a>.\u00a0 It was 938 words (4.69% of my 200 words\/day goal\u2014hey, I\u2019m ahead of the game!!) and took two hours of writing and formatting.\u00a0 So it looked like I was off to a great start.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Then the weekend came, as did a stomach bug (that I\u2019m still battling), so nothing got done.\u00a0 By Tuesday, I was working on a blog post for the Family History Through the Alphabet theme.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it really didn\u2019t have anything to do with writing about my family history.\u00a0 I spent two days and 17.5 hours writing and formatting a <a title=\"Family History Through the Alphabet \u2013 Diigo\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/family-history-through-the-alphabet-diigo\/\" target=\"_blank\">guide for how to use Diigo (a social bookmarking website) to build a genealogy resource toolbox<\/a>.\u00a0 In total, I wrote 5,297 words over those two days, but since it wasn\u2019t about my family history, I don\u2019t think it should count (but hey, I did write <em>something<\/em> genealogy-related, so that\u2019s a good thing, right?).<\/p>\n<p>Today, I wrote my blog post for the Genealogy By the States theme, and I made sure it had something to do with my family history.\u00a0 So I <a title=\"Genealogy By the States \u2013 Week 5 \u2013 Connecticut\" href=\"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/genealogy-by-the-states-week-5-connecticut\/\" target=\"_blank\">wrote about my 11th great-grandfather, John Webster, and my 10th great-granduncle, Robert Treat<\/a>, who both served as governor for the Colony of Connecticut.\u00a0 I managed to crank out 801 words in five hours (part of that time included some additional research).\u00a0 Again, I was over my 200 words\/day goal by 4%.<\/p>\n<p>I know the goal is to write a certain amount of words EACH day, and my goal was 200.\u00a0 And although I only spent two out of seven days writing about my family history, I actually did surpass my overall goal.\u00a0 For seven days at 200 words\/day, I should have accumulated 1,400 words total.\u00a0 I wrote a total of 1,739 for the week, so I feel like I am achieving my goal, just a little differently.\u00a0 And, hey, add in the nearly 5,300 words that were genealogy-related, heck, I made the goal for the month (and then some) in just four days of writing!<\/p>\n<p>But unfortunately, that is not the point of the challenge.\u00a0 The point is to write a little bit each day.\u00a0 And now that I\u2019ve gotten that big writing project out of my system, hopefully the stomach bug will follow and I can manage to get a little bit done each day for the rest of the month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Family History Writing Challenge started on February 1, and I am off to a rocky start\u2026well sort of.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the scoop for the first week.
