{"id":179,"date":"2011-11-07T21:50:00","date_gmt":"2011-11-08T03:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/orphan-photo-100\/"},"modified":"2013-07-06T16:59:31","modified_gmt":"2013-07-06T21:59:31","slug":"orphan-photo-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/orphan-photo-100\/","title":{"rendered":"Orphan Photo #100"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Orphan 0100-A\" alt=\"Orphan 0100-A\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-NYUgq6GWSP8\/TriZBR--xeI\/AAAAAAAAF70\/ENrRUAYkH4k\/Orphan0100A3.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"347\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Orphan 0100-B\" alt=\"Orphan 0100-B\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/-w4v6sWl8kQM\/TriZBnw51xI\/AAAAAAAAF78\/SCjq7_vwElI\/Orphan0100B3.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"347\" height=\"122\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a photograph of <strong>William A Lynch<\/strong>, who was a prominent Canton, Ohio resident during the 19th century.\u00a0 His is a interesting story, along with several relatives, prominent in their own right.\u00a0 Among these relatives are teachers, lawyers, doctors, journalists, a cancer researcher, and a Pulitzer Prize winner.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>William A Lynch<\/strong> was born 4 August 1844 in Canton, Stark, Ohio, to parents <strong>Arnold Lynch<\/strong> and <strong>Frances Horan<\/strong>.<sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0 He was a prominent attorney, having served as Prosecuting Attorney for Stark County for two terms in addition to general practice until his death.\u00a0 In fact, he died while representing Corwin D. Bachtel in the Canton State Bank trials in February 1907.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>On 14 October 1874, in Canton, Stark, Ohio, William married <strong>Eliza R Underhill<\/strong>, daughter of <strong>Judge James W Underhill<\/strong> and <strong>Henrietta Widgeon<\/strong>.<sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0 Together they had three children who lived to adulthood.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Alice Allen Lynch, b. August 1875, probably in Canton, Stark, Ohio;<sup>4<\/sup> d. 3 January 1949 in Miami, Dade, Florida;<sup>5<\/sup> m. George Paull Alexander, 26 December 1907 in Canton.<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Frances H Lynch, b. 30 August 1878 in Canton, Stark, Ohio;<sup>7<\/sup> m. John J Miller, 2 September 1914 in Canton.<sup>8<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Clara Julia Lynch, b. 6 March 1882 in Canton, Stark, Ohio;<sup>9<\/sup> d. 8 December 1985 in Alexandria, Virginia;<sup>10<\/sup> she never married.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Following is a listing of select family members and their accomplishments:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arnold Lynch<\/strong> \u2013 Arnold is William\u2019s father, who served as the Stark County Surveyor and Recorder for many years.<sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0 He was very involved in the establishment of the railroads, particularly the Ft. Wayne RR and the Cleveland &amp; Mahoning Valley RR.<sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0 Arnold was born about 1812 in Ireland and died between 1855 (last known child born) and 27 December 1856 (probate administrators appointed).<sup>13<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clara Julia Lynch<\/strong> \u2013 William\u2019s daughter Clara was a well-known cancer researcher, who in 1926 was \u201ccredited with introducing Swiss mice into American laboratories.\u201d<sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0 She earned her undergraduate degree at Smith College in 1903.\u00a0 She then earned her graduate and doctorate degrees from Columbia University in 1912 and 1919 respectively.\u00a0 Dr. Lynch worked for Rockefeller University for 53 years as a teacher and researcher.\u00a0 She died in 1985 at the age of 103.<sup>15<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Price Day<\/strong> \u2013 Although William never met his grandson-in-law, I\u2019m sure he would have approved.\u00a0 Williams\u2019 granddaughter Alice A Alexander (daughter of Alice Allen Lynch and George Paull Alexander) married Price Day in 1931.<sup>16<\/sup>\u00a0 Price was an accomplished journalist and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1949 for his article \u201cExperiment in Freedom\u2014India and Its First Year of Independence\u201d that was published in the <em>Baltimore Sun<\/em> in 1948.<sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0 Price and Alice had four sons, who were all involved in news and media during their careers.<\/p>\n<p>There are many more interesting people associated with William A Lynch.\u00a0 While not every detail is included (due to time), you can learn more about the family, by visiting the family tree I created <a href=\"http:\/\/trees.ancestry.com\/tree\/32060050\/person\/18174957106\">here<\/a> on Ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>As of this posting, no direct descendants have been located.\u00a0 This is still an ongoing process and I hope to find someone to pass this photograph on to in the near future.\u00a0 There <em>are<\/em> living descendants, and you are welcome to contact me with information if you have found someone.\u00a0 <a href=\"mailto:genblogjulie@gmail.com\">Email<\/a> is preferable, but the comments are private until I approve them (I won\u2019t approve the comments if living relatives are mentioned).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Sources<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 &#8220;High Soaring Hopes of Bachtel Crushed By Death of Lynch,&#8221;
