{"id":1149,"date":"2008-11-15T09:33:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-15T15:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/saturday-in-the-attic-111508\/"},"modified":"2013-07-12T23:18:55","modified_gmt":"2013-07-13T04:18:55","slug":"saturday-in-the-attic-111508","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/saturday-in-the-attic-111508\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday in the Attic &#8211; 11\/15\/08"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to try a new &#8220;column&#8221; called Saturday in the Attic, where each week I will post some sort of memento.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m kicking this column off with something I wanted to post last week, in honor of what would have been my paternal grandparent&#8217;s 65th wedding anniversary if they were still with us.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>John Francis CAHILL and Joan Garrison McMAHON somehow managed to marry on 6 November 1943, just a few months after John started active duty in WWII.\u00a0 One year later, they were celebrating their one-year anniversary on each side of the ocean, as John was serving in France.\u00a0 John sent Joan the following letter dated 6 November 1944.<\/p>\n<hr align=\"center\" size=\"2\" \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"CAHILL, John Francis CAHILL V-Mail 01\" src=\"http:\/\/lh6.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/SR7dy0lgCyI\/AAAAAAAAClU\/Vl9Zqv8e3ZE\/CAHILLJohnFrancisCAHILLVMail016.jpg\" width=\"454\" height=\"557\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hi Sweetheart<\/p>\n<p>Being somewhere in France on this day sure is not my and your wish. but no matter where I am I am thinking of you more than ever.\u00a0 I hope this time next yr I will be home.\u00a0 as is sure lonesome without you.\u00a0 one of the boys pick up a stamper with this border on it so I made a little card for you.<\/p>\n<p>Love Jack<br \/>\nor papa<\/p>\n<p>Love from your husband on your 1st yr of marriage<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr align=\"center\" size=\"2\" \/>\n<p>Notice that he signs &#8220;Jack or papa&#8221; at the close of the letter.\u00a0 He&#8217;s referring to the fact that Joan is about five months pregnant.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve had a theory that my dad was one of those &#8220;in case I don&#8217;t come back&#8221; pregnancies.\u00a0 He was born in early March 1945, putting conception likely in early June.\u00a0 Although John started active duty in June 1943, he remained in the U.S.\u00a0 He left for Europe on 28 June 1944.\u00a0 A conception date in early June and his leaving in late June supports my &#8220;in case I don&#8217;t come back&#8221; pregnancy theory.<\/p>\n<p>As an aside, he did return safely in January 1946; they had no other children.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to try a new &#8220;column&#8221; called Saturday in the Attic, where each week I will post some sort of memento.
