{"id":1075,"date":"2009-01-24T04:13:00","date_gmt":"2009-01-24T10:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/saturday-in-the-attic-012409\/"},"modified":"2013-07-12T20:00:14","modified_gmt":"2013-07-13T01:00:14","slug":"saturday-in-the-attic-012409","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/genealogy.julietarr.com\/blog\/saturday-in-the-attic-012409\/","title":{"rendered":"Saturday in the Attic &#8211; 01\/24\/09"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last few weeks I have been preparing to apply for membership into the Daughters of the American Revolution.\u00a0 So I had to pull out the Webster family Bible wherein my legacy resides.\u00a0 The Bible belonged to my third great-grandmother, Sarah Norton WEBSTER.\u00a0 It was given to her in 185[3] as a gift from her father, Calvin Price WEBSTER.\u00a0 It is in critical condition, so this is only the second time I&#8217;ve opened it, as I needed to gather some final sources for my DAR application.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>While carefully combing through the pages, I came across some loose papers and clippings.\u00a0 Among them was the following letter, written by Sarah&#8217;s niece, Julie Ann WEBSTER in 1952, presumably to her cousin (also a niece of Sarah) Emma Ellen HANIFAN.\u00a0 What&#8217;s interesting about this letter, is the reference to DAR.\u00a0 Julia was a member, as were others in our family.\u00a0 I thought it was fitting for this week&#8217;s column since I am in the midst of completing my DAR application.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"WEBSTER, Julia Ann WEBSTER Letter to Emma Ellen HANIFAN 01-A\" src=\"http:\/\/lh4.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/SXrby7Uq-WI\/AAAAAAAACzQ\/IFaTMkkMN5Q\/WEBSTER%2C%20Julia%20Ann%20WEBSTER%20Letter%20to%20Emma%20Ellen%20HANIFAN%2001-A%5B5%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"504\" height=\"366\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"WEBSTER, Julia Ann WEBSTER Letter to Emma Ellen HANIFAN 01-B\" src=\"http:\/\/lh3.ggpht.com\/_udfzp1vLXt0\/SXrbzgmyAfI\/AAAAAAAACzU\/1pK4qI2wu6s\/WEBSTER%2C%20Julia%20Ann%20WEBSTER%20Letter%20to%20Emma%20Ellen%20HANIFAN%2001-B%5B5%5D.jpg?imgmax=800\" width=\"504\" height=\"356\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Transcription:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pontiac Mich&#8211;<br \/>\nJan-7-1952<\/p>\n<p>My dear Emma,<\/p>\n<p>This is a late thank you for that lovely box of card.<\/p>\n<p>When your letter came It was so carefully put away I had no address not ever to send a greeting.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for your remem-brance that was enclosed in Christmas greeting.<\/p>\n<p>I felt like I have in the days gone by when your good mother remembered me.<\/p>\n<p>Counting your little letter I felt that the C. Webster decendants were with me,&#8211;a nice long one from Maria (Hanifan) Ballard in Ohio and one from the Vliets, Birmingham Mich. also a card from Frank Hanifan.<\/p>\n<p>All his family but one Frances are married&#8211;He had nine with two sets of twins.<\/p>\n<p>A few years back, the Vliets lost their son.\u00a0 This year they lost their only grandson, a boy of 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>In August my niece&#8217;s sone Joseph was ordained at Pittsburgh\u00a0 He belongs to O.F.M Cap&#8217;s Order\u00a0 He is a teacher in a college&#8211;Washington D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for card when you went west with __ (plus) other grandmothers<\/p>\n<p>How time does fly.\u00a0 Ella (Bird) Murray and her sister Flora are still on the family tree.<\/p>\n<p>Flora&#8217;s family are scattered in the south and in the west.\u00a0 Ella&#8217;s g-dau&#8211;a graduate nurse.\u00a0 I never see them<\/p>\n<p>Flora lives alone.<\/p>\n<p>Today I had a letter from a niece of Marie (Hanifan) Ballard.\u00a0 She would like to join D.A.R.&#8211;a dau of Charlie Hanifan.<\/p>\n<p>Did I write you we had a record for the D.A.R. in the Norton or (Maughton) line<\/p>\n<p>Solomon Norton was born Naughton in War 1716.\u00a0 Naughton&#8211;went to Vermont&#8211;was called Norton as one of his uncles was called.\u00a0 Around 1823&#8211;went back to old name&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>A dec. of Luther N. Webster (in Iowa) is a member of D.A.R. as is a dec. of Wm.
