So instead of doing a “packing” list for my upcoming trip to the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) 2013 Conference and Allen County Public Library (ACPL), I thought I’d post my to-do list. These are things I needed to do to prepare for the conference and research at the ACPL. I used a similar list when prepping for RootsTech 2012 in conjunction with a trip to the Family History Library. Maybe it will help you as you prep for the FGS conference, which is just a mere week away!
Download conference syllabus and make final decision on what sessions to attend.
Save syllabus to Kindle Fire.
Print Exhibit Hall map and mark the booths I want to visit.
Sync Families app on Kindle Fire with Legacy.
Print to-do list for research at the ACPL.
Print out calendar, just in case my phone battery dies (or else I won’t know where to be when!)
Make sure I have enough personal and ISGS business cards ready to go.
Create a list of items to bring along as my research toolkit (e.g., laptop, Kindle Fire, camera, notebook, pencils, etc.).
Grab a set of GeneaBlogger beads…just in case I don’t run into Jenny, who will be playing the role of Thomas this year. |
Good “to do” list that I’m building on as I prepare. I’m doing pre-research to figure out exactly who I want to focus on, what I want to know, and–this is the hard part–what source is most likely to help me find the person or data. The pre-research part is being sure I know exactly what I know, so I don’t duplicate, and trying to forecast where to search for info (what database at the library, what books, what cemetery). This is such a challenge! Thanks for your ideas, a great head start.
You’re welcome, Marian. I did my research list about a month ago, so I could take my time with it. But of course, yesterday, I was thinking, hmmm…what else could I look at. So I ended up adding a few last minute things.
Excellent list, Julie! I’m sure I’ll run into you at some point. Of course, my beads won’t be nearly as big as Thomas’, but I’m bringing my tiara, so hopefully that will make up for it 🙂
LOL…the only tiara I have is from my wedding day, which is slated for a shadow box (boy, 10 years later and I still haven’t gotten around to that!). I plan to be at the dinner, so I’ll see ya there!
