Our friend, Smallest Leaf over at Small-leaved Shamrock, inquired about how I gathered the information for my new “this week’s family events” posts.  So I thought I’d put together a quick tutorial on how I’m doing it in hopes it can help her and others out.

It’s amazing how much information I actually have for many of my relatives.  The problem:  I didn’t know it until a few months ago. I had the obvious sources:  birth/death/marriage certificates, obituaries, memorial/funeral cards, and the like.  And of course I used the sources to figure out names, dates, places, relationships, etc.  And while I knew I had other items, I thought them to be unessential for my research.  And then it hit me…

I’m still very new to the whole blogging world.  Even though I have an extensive knowledge in web design, I am finding it difficult to customize the LiveJournal blog.  Although I am fairly satisfied with my current blog, there were many things I wasn’t able to do until I stumbled upon Windows Live Writer (WLW).  So I thought I’d pass along a review of the application.

Taking a cue from Thomas MacEntee’s “On This Day” posts at his blog Destination: Austin Family, I am starting a regular post called “Family Events.”  Instead of doing this for each day like Thomas does, I am going to post on Sunday’s for the upcoming week.  So, here’s the debut of “Family Events!”

The theme for the 5th Edition Smile For The Camera – A Carnival Of Images is Crowning Glory. Show us those wonderful photographs of hairdos and maybe even a few don’ts. Don’t limit yourself to just hair fashion through the ages, got a great photograph of a hat, helmet, bonnet, or some other interesting headgear?

Because my mom lives in constant fear of forest fires, she has an evacuation plan in place.  Instead of fretting over what to take during a stressful evacuation, she grabs the list and starts packing.  Even though I don’t live in constant threat of forest fires, there are several other disasters that could occur.

The theme for the 55th Edition of the Carnival of Genealogy is Show & Tell.  I’ve been doing some digging into my paternal grandfather, specifically his time overseas during WWII, so I thought it appropriate to “show” some of these WWII artifacts and “tell” a complementary story. his story is by no means complete.  I have much more digging and uprooting to do, but I wanted to share what I have so far.
