There are so many factors that take us away from our passion for genealogy:  lack of time and money, limited access to records, and other obligations.  All of these suck the motivation right out of us and when we do find time or some extra cash, we don’t have the desire to do any research.  So how can we find that motivation?

On Saturday, James Tanner, author of Genealogy’s Star blog, posted the article On Attending Genealogy Conferences.  Reading his post got me thinking about why it’s important to me to attend conferences and why I’m excited about attending my first national genealogy conference in September.  While I’m gearing up for a big, multi-day conference, my reasons are the same for smaller conferences, in addition to workshops, seminars, and the like.

Maureen Taylor, the “Photo Detective,” will be the speaker at the St. Louis Genealogical Society’s all-day seminar on Saturday, July 30 at Orlando Gardens on Watson Rd. in Webster Groves, Missouri.  The seminar, “Clues to the Past in Family Photos,” will feature four lectures: Identifying and Dating Family Photos Discovering Genealogical Clues in Photos Reading Immigrant Clues in Photos Photo Editing Programs:  An Overview The cost is $65 ($55 for StLGS members) and includes lunch.  Pre-registration is required.  To learn more or to register online, visit the StLGS website.

I’m very excited!  As I write this post, the FGS 2011 Conference is 50 days away.  In a way, it seems a little far off, but when you’ve been working on the conference behind the scenes for over a year, 50 days is actually not too far away.

Time is running out to save $50 on the full registration fee for the FGS 2011 Conference.  Registration must be received online (or postmarked) by 11:59 pm on July 1st in order to take advantage of the discount price.

So I finally registered for the FGS 2011 Conference, which will be held in Springfield, Illinois, September 7-10, 2011.  There’s plenty of time to register for the conference, but if you want to save some $$ you’ll have to register before July 1. On Saturday, September 24, 2011, the Fox Valley Genealogical Society will hosts its 18th annual fall conference in Naperville, Illinois.  This year’s theme is “Building a Better Pedigree” and features the one and only, Christine Rose.

Michael John Neill recently announced a new publication called Casefile Clues for Beginners.  I’m sure if it’s anything like Casefile Clues, it will be a great publication.  Kudos to Michael on this new endeavor!
