Wow, I didn’t accomplish one darn thing on my 2018 goals list! Eeeek! This year unexpectedly turned into an educational year. I was able to attend two institutes, two conferences, and a virtual institute.
- IGHR – Advanced German Genealogy
- GRIP – You Be the Judge: Practicum Using Standards to Evaluate Genealogical Work
- SLIG Virtual – Advanced Evidence Analysis Practicum
- Illinois State Genealogical Society Conference
- Luxembourg American Cultural Society Conference
With my normal workload and all the traveling, plus a move, it didn’t leave time for much else. I also am happy to report that I was elected to the board of the Association for Professional Genealogists (APG), so that will keep me busy for at least the next two years.
I didn’t make too much progress on my portfolio, and, in fact, I need to change my case study project, so all that work is out the window, at least for the portfolio—I plan to finish it though, and submit it to the National Genealogical Society Quarterly.
As for publishing articles, nope, didn’t do that either—but I have some lined up for 2019 (that’s progress, right?).
And as for the special project, it got put on hold for now.
So what do I have planned for 2019?
- First, I want to relaunch my business. I’ve spent the last three months getting things in order to implement a revised business model. With that will come a a website redesign. This will hopefully all take place in the first quarter of the new year.
- Second, I plan to work on a few books throughout the year. I’ve been spending time trying to figure out the best way to publish, so hopefully you’ll see something around the second quarter of 2019.
- Third, I plan to publish several articles in 2019. I already have two lined up and am in discussions for others.
- Fourth, I plan to blog more (for real, I swear!).
- Fifth, I plan to attend my first APG Professional Management Conference.
With all of these things, plus my regular workload with FORUM, APG eNews, and clients, I’m not sure how much time I will be able to put toward my BCG portfolio, but whatever time I have free, that’s what I’ll be working on.
What about you? What did you accomplish this year? What goals are you setting for next year? Please share, I’d love to hear what’s going on with you!
104 blog posts written, 2 brick walls broken down (one smashed to smithereens), learned a lot, filled in the dash in the lives of some ancestors, found wills, estate papers, and pictures I didn’t expect to find, and generally had just a pretty good year. Next year, I want to concentrate on more brick walls. I have plenty of those, even now.
Wow, Janice! That’s fantastic progress!! Keep up the good work and have a wonderful 2019 🙂
My biggest genealogy accomplishment was completing the BU online Genealogical Research course, after thinking about it for years “someday” I would take it. “Some day” finally arrived! 🙂 For 2019, I plan to get involved more w/ the Dallas Genealogical Society — have been a life member for years, just never go to meetings as it’s a 20 mile drive one-way, ugh. Also, I hope to take a class at IGHR (1st choice), GRIP (2nd choice), or here in Texas w/ the Texas Genealogical Society sponsoring their own genealogy institute.. Oh, and I’ve got a number of research reports to write up..
Congrats on completing the BU course! That’s an amazing accomplishment. Best of luck in your 2019 endeavors!!
